Fried dough - does it bring back memories of county or state fairs, or church bazaars where women with their hair pulled back stood over the deep fryers and produced these tasty treats? Nothing like that first bite of goodness after you've been outdoors for hours. Now you can recreate these tasty tidbits at home with a minimum of work.
FRIED DOUGH
Ingredients
1 pound of pre-made pizza dough (can be bought at your grocery store or if you’re ambitious you can make it from scratch)
Olive oil
1 stick of Crisco for baking
Directions:
· Roll dough into a large log
· Cut dough into 2 slices and pull the dough into an elongated shape
· In a deep skillet:
· Heat the Crisco and add enough olive oil for frying (about 1 to 1 ½ inches)
· Drop the elongated pieces of dough into the hot oil mixture, turning to brown evenly
· When dough has cooked and browned, removed to a paper towel lined dish
· Continue frying until all the dough is used
· Dispose of remaining oil safely
To Serve
Provide an assortment of toppings – most commonly used are tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese
If using the fried dough as a dessert, sprinkle generously with Confectionary (Powdered) Sugar.

Chef's notes:
- If you made too much (how is that even possible?) and have a few leftover, use them for breakfast.
- I topped mine with bacon and fried eggs topped with some Tabasco sauce.
- Marion used hers as a base for her fried eggs and salsa.
It's a delightful change from toast or English muffin.
