Who doesn't like Chinese food? We love Chinese food. But many of the ingredients in Chinese dishes are things we can't have. And the frozen version of most Chinese dishes is loaded with sodium. This recipe - Chinese Orange Chicken - originally appeared on the Friends Kitchen Secrets YouTube channel. I've removed as much sodium as possible without losing the taste; and instead of sesame seeds (my colon doesn't like those) we used chopped green onion. I hope you enjoy this adaptation.
Chinese Orange Chicken
INGREDIENTS
150gms Chicken (cut into 1 inch cubes) 2 medium chicken breasts
1 tsp. Crushed Red Chili flakes
1 1/2 Tablespoons low sodium Soy Sauce
1 Cup Orange Juice (2 small-medium oranges squeezed)
1 tbsp. Olive Oil
4 to 6 Tablespoons Flour
1 teaspoon milk (I used Almond milk)
1 Egg (beaten)
1 tbsp. Chopped Green Onion
1 tsp. Garlic Paste (or 1 clove garlic smashed and finely minced)
Oil for frying
Directions:
In a small bowl add the chicken, soy sauce, olive oil, ½ tsp chili flakes, and ¼ cup orange juice. (first 5 ingredients). Mix until chicken is thoroughly coated.
Add the egg and flour. Again mix until all is thoroughly coated.
Using a 10-12” frying pan, heat olive oil. Add the coated chicken pieces slowly to the olive oil so the pieces do not touch. Turn while cooking to brown the pieces evenly. When chicken is fully cooked, (about 5-8 minutes depending on the size of the chicken cubes), remove with slotted spoon. Place in a bowl or dish lined with paper towel.

To make the sauce:
In a clean pan, add garlic paste to approximately. 2 tablespoons olive oil. Cook over medium to low heat until garlic is softened. Add 1 tsp soy sauce, 2-3 Tbsp of orange juice and mix. Heat through.
Return chicken pieces to the sauce adding a splash of milk (1 tsp) and remaining soy sauce. Continue to sauté until all ingredients are coating the chicken (about 2-3 minutes).
Remove from heat. Place orange chicken on plate and garnish with chopped green onions and a slice of orange (optional). You may also like to add a light sprinkle of sesame seeds (if you are not restricted from eating seeds).
Serve with a side of jasmine rice.
