Here's a fancy way to serve your baked apples. A perfect way to treat yourself or your family to nature's bounty.
Ingredients
4 apples (I used Gala apples but choose your favorite)
1 box of Pepperidge Farms phyllo dough
1/2 cup of sugar (I used Truvia in place of processed sugar)
fruit filling for center of apple
Directions
Peel and core apples. Set aside.
Using a sharp knife, cut the phyllo dough into long strips. Set aside.
Roll each prepared apple in the sugar (Truvia) and place on a parchment lined baking tray.
Using one long strip of the phyllo dough, wrap each apple starting at base and working to the top.
When the apples are wrapped, fill the center with fruit of your choice. (I used sour cherries that have very little sugar.)
Bake in a 350 degree F oven for approximately one (1) hour. Check after 45 minutes to see that apples are done. Crust should be golden brown.
When apples are done, remove from oven and let cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
Can be served as is or with a dollop of whipped topping or a small scoop of vanilla ice cream.
NOTES: As an alternative, if you are not on a sugar restricted diet (or if you want to cheat a bit), replace the fruit filling with a chunk of dark chocolate that will melt into the apple. (This is how I saw the original recipe.)
This recipe was adapted from an original recipe on the PBS show 'Milk Street'.
